NAHB Green Program:
NAHB sponsors the NAHB National Green Building Conference, the NAHB National Green Building Awards, and provides information and education on sustainable home building using renewable materials prudently to conserve energy and environmental resources. In February 2008, NAHB unveiled the NAHB National Green Building Program and the University of Housing Certified Green Professional designation for builders, remodelers and other members of the home building industry.
Being a Green Builder:
On May 21, 2008 the Regional Board of the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago passed the following resolution:
HBAGC will officially adopt and begin implementing, as a voluntary program, the NAHB National Green Building Program, based on the NAHB Green Building Guidelines in its entirety as deliniated on www.nahbgreen.org and supported by the NAHB Green Building Program for State and Local Home Builder Associations outlined on www.nahb.org/greentoolkit with full support from all available HBAGC operations and resources.
This voluntary program allows home builders and remodelers the ability to educate the consumer of potential green construction features currently available, and allow the consumer to choose whether or not to incorporate these features into their new home. HBAGC members use this program to better market their homes, and meet the needs of the changing housing market.
Not all HBAGC members are currently Certified Green Professionals (CGP). To obtain a CGP designation, HBAGC members must complete an NAHB University of Housing course and continuing training courses every two years thereafter. If you are interested in locating a CGP builder or remodeler, use the "Find a Builder" function on the home page to locate a green builder.
In 2007 the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the International Code Council (ICC) partnered to form to establish a much-needed and nationally-recognizable standard definition of what is meant by "Green Building." A consensus committee was formed to develop this standard in compliance with the requirements of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The resulting ANSI approved ICC-700-2008 National Green Building Standard defines green building for single and multifamily homes, residential remodeling projects and site development projects while still allowing for the flexibility required for regionally-appropriate best green practices.
